Opportunities Lost ..... Really?
So, we have all heard about lost opportunities and if we
let opportunities pass they won’t come around again.
Daunting? Well for me it was. When I was
younger and heard about losing opportunities I thought that life would end, how
could I possibly grab them all? What about the opportunities I didn’t know were
opportunities? Cause lets be real, sometimes in our younger years, adults may mean
well with their suggestions and directives but we in our youth, lack the
experience and the knowledge to grasp them, so things pass us by. So I am wondering;
will I ever see those opportunities again?
It made me wonder:
My Uncle John always shares his favourite quote from the famous William
Shakespeare, which states "There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures."
It made me wonder:
About that suggestion to start modelling because of my height and weight at that time (Eh hem). Was that an opportunity lost? I honestly did not see myself modelling and my feelings of self worth and esteem were not were they should've been for such a venture.
About that opportunity to take my singing career a little further. Could I not have more opportunities at a later date when I was ready? I still however, have a passion for singing. Should I let that die because of missed opportunities?
I also thought about turning down opportunities in the past that seemed a bit out of my comfort zone and edged on the conscience of my moral compass. I contemplated how my life would turn out if I kept turning down these 'opportunities'.
This made me wonder...... if opportunities are lost, should I just forget about it all? Forget about my dreams, aspirations, etc. (Dramatic? I know)
At an interesting time in my life, I was having my annual vacation in New York. My ritual when leaving the big city was to buy magazines to take with me on the plane ride back. These consisted of Cosmopolitan, Essence (the staples) and any others that seemed interesting at the time. Sitting in the departure lounge I decided to read "A letter from the Editor" in the Essence Magazine (I don't read the letters from the editors...ever. But I did).
Let me apologize now for not giving you the edition, year and so on but what stuck out to me more than anything was the message, which to me was so simple. The editor wrote about her former career, in which she worked unhappily for the last couple years of 20. At 40 years old, she decided to switch careers. The moral to her story was, 'it is never too late'.
We have the power to change our circumstances, if we want to. That dream, that hobby, that one time experience, that career change, just plain old starting over. It can be accomplished. I believe God has some divine work in our lives and his timing is always right.
The editor, I don't know her stories or the struggles she faced but she was determined to make it happen. My question is ....... are opportunities really lost or are they just deferred until we are ready?
