Soca does give me me powers

It is one thing to say that Soca is life but if you have not seen it or felt it for your self, you have no idea.

It is true that music has the power to move us. But there is just something so different about our music. I've seen live performances of all kinds of music; Gospel, Reggae, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Electric. Yes, they can be riveting and moving but there is something so special and appealing about watching your own perform, in what we like to say, 'we culture'.

However, if you have not experienced Caribbean music, the music that gives life, (calypso, spouge, soca, jab jab, bashment soca, and the list goes on) especially carnival music, you have not been elevated to a special place. Please, Fix it.

Yes, all music tells a story but Soca music to me comes from the soul in its most raw form. One of the biggest hits for the season came from Fimba - Funky Business. When you hear the lyrics, you get it straight away. We keeps it real.

Them just does study people business, study people business, study people business so,

Well I don't care what people wanna say,

Dem will talk you any time of day,

Yah do good dem talking yah,

Yah do bad dem talking yah,

Dem never have nothing good to say

Dem ask de most questions

Where yah from,

Where yah going,

Where yah mudda,

When last yah been home,

Mind yah funky business, mind yah funky business, Leave me alone, when yah see me just leave me alone

Mind yah funky business, mind yah funky business, Just leave me alone, when yah see me leave me alone.

All sport aside though, the stories told, with the play on lyrics and the grooviness and beat is what soca is all about. For me this shone through in what i consider to be the best tunes for the season. I love them all but certain ones stood out;
  • Lil Rick - Ben it, Hover it, True Story, Sugar Lump, Morning Vibez, Hold On

One of the biggest hits for me, (of course it has nothing to do with my sexy shape) would be; 'bring that mudda sally now', oh (Lil Rick - Mudda Sally). It won the Jam Tune competition and Road March for the 2018 season. Some history on 'Mudda Sally', is in the following snippet.

"During Barbadian festivals, there are a number of costumed characters that are depicted, among them is the Mother Sally, called the “Muddah Sally” by the locals. Mother Sally is a figure meant to represent fertility with her exaggerated breast and bottom. This character has similarities to the Gelede Masquerade of Yoruba in South Western Nigeria and the Ga-ethnic people of Ghana. In the past the character was played by men in masks to protect their identity, but today it is most often played by women and their performances are filled with comedy and rhythmic pelvic dances. This character is a reflection of Barbados’ cultural history in the realm of the Tuk Bands and the Landship."
